Via Jim Callis, the Yankees have signed sixth round pick Rob Refsnyder for roughly $206k, the full slot value for the 187th overall pick. That leaves the Yankees with $1,606,300 worth of draft pool money to offer first rounder Ty Hensley without facing penalties. They can pay him up to $1,815,910 by exceeding their draft pool by 5%, which would result in a tax but not forfeiture of next year’s first rounder.
Refsynder, an outfielder at Arizona who the Yankees will try at second base, is a big-time contact hitter with a swing geared for doubles into the gaps rather than homers of the fence. He’s an average defensive player in the corner outfield and hasn’t played the middle infield regularly since high school. Refsnyder was recently named the College World Series Most Outstanding Player and is a pretty interesting conversion candidate as an offense-minded second baseman.
