Game 47: Back Home

Maybe it’s just me, but it feels like it’s been an eternity since the Yankees were last at home. They just wrapped up an eight-game turned six and a half game road trip that included three scheduled off-days, a rainout, a suspended game, and two flight delays. I’m sure the guys are looking forward to spending the next few days sleeping in their own beds.

Anyway, the Angels are in town for three games this weekend. The Yankees dropped their last two games to the Rangers earlier this week and they are the only team in baseball without a losing streak of at least three games this season. This is like the no shutout streak badge of honor last year — the Yankees are also the only team that hasn’t been shutout this year, by the way — only more meaningful. Keep the “no three-game losing streak” streak alive. Here are the lineups:

Roster Moves: Welcome back, Tommy Kahnle. He has been activated off the disabled list, as expected. Ryan Bollinger was sent down following Wednesday’s game to clear a roster spot … The Yankees are planning to activate Greg Bird (ankle) tomorrow, Aaron Boone said. They have not yet decided who will go down to clear a roster spot. Boone also said they might’ve activated Bird today had the Angels been starting a right-hander.

Injury Update: Adam Warren (lat) has joined Triple-A Scranton and will begin a rehab assignment tomorrow. He’s going to throw two innings, reports Conor Foley. Would be cool if the Yankees got Warren back before the end of the homestand.

Game 45: Facing A Possible Trade Target

Tonight, the Yankees have a chance to accomplish two things. One they will accomplish for sure. They’ll get a firsthand look at lefty Cole Hamels, who figures to be a hot commodity at the trade deadline. The Yankees could use another starter and Hamels will likely be available. It’s only a matter of time until the two sides are mentioned in serious trade rumors.

The second thing the Yankees can accomplish tonight? Clinching a series win. It would be their ninth straight series victory, which is bananas. You have to go back to 1998 — the 2018 Yankees seem to be doing a lot of things last done by the 1998 Yankees, huh? — for the last time the Yankees won nine consecutive series. Just keep winning series, baby. Win series and everything will work itself out. Here are tonight’s lineups:

There is a tiny little bit of rain in the forecast tonight, though nothing heavy and nothing that should really interfere with the game, thankfully. The game is scheduled to begin at 8:05pm ET and YES will have the broadcast. Enjoy the game.

Injury Update: Greg Bird (ankle) could return “sometime this weekend,” said Aaron Boone, though nothing is set in stone … Jordan Montgomery (elbow) will need a “little bit more time before he starts throwing,” according to Boone. Montgomery was placed on the disabled list on May 2nd and, at the time, the Yankees said he would be shut down 2-3 weeks. Sounds like he’ll be shut down a little longer than that … Adam Warren (lat) is already pitching in simulated games in Tampa. He could return to the Yankees as soon as late next week.

Game 39: Domingo on a Saturday

The Yankees have lost back-to-back games for the first time in a month, which is pretty annoying, but it was bound to happen at some point. Can’t go 17-3 in a 20-game span without the three. Anyway, the Yankees are the only team in baseball yet to lose three straight games at some point this season. Every other team has done it at least once already. It would be cool to avoid the year’s first three-game losing streak this afternoon.

On the mound today is rookie righty Domingo German, who was masterful in his first MLB start last weekend, tossing six no-hit innings against the Indians. Little Sunday has high-end stuff and he mixed his pitches well — he threw 25 fastballs, 35 curveballs, and 24 changeups last week. He throws hard but doesn’t live off his fastball. Fun to watch. The weather stinks today. It is chilly in New York and it was raining this morning, and it’s going to rain again later this afternoon. The rain is supposed to start back up around 5pm ET or so. Injury Updates: Tommy Kahnle (shoulder, biceps) and Adam Warren (lat) are going to Tampa tomorrow to continue their rehab. Kahnle threw his second bullpen session today and Warren is scheduled to throw his first bullpen session Monday … Brandon Drury (migraines) has started wearing yellow-tinted glasses at the plate because his vision gets “very blurry” at night, according to DJ Eberle. Drury said he liked the way they brightened things up for him. Aaron Boone indicated the glasses are more of a temporary measure than a long-term solution.

Game 34: Little Sunday on Sunday

At long last, this 18 games in 18 days stretch comes to an end this afternoon. It has been a smashing success so far. Couldn’t have expected it to go any better. The Yankees are 15-2 while outscoring their opponent 100-44 in the first 17 games, and they’re not beating up on rebuilding teams either. The Twins, Angels, Astros, and Indians are all projected contenders if not World Series contenders.

This afternoon Domingo German — he’s Little Sunday and 6-foot-7 pitching prospect Domingo Acevedo is Big Sunday — is making his first big league start after his successful four-inning relief outing five days ago. Jordan Montgomery is out 6-8 weeks, and unless the Yankees swing a trade soon (unlikely), this rotation spot is German’s for the time being. He’s not stretched all the way out right now — German hasn’t thrown more than 61 pitches in a game this year — so hope for five innings today and let the bullpen take care of the rest. The plan is two bullpen sessions, then live batting practice, then at least one minor league rehab game … Adam Warren (lat) has started playing catch. “I don’t feel any pain … Just have to build up arm strength,” he said.

Game 31: Win The Game, Win The Series

Even with Monday’s loss, the first six games of this seven-game road trip have gone pretty darn well for the Yankees. They’ve won five of the six games so far, including the last two by shutting out the Astros in Houston. They’ve allowed seven runs total in the six games. Also, the Yankees have not allowed a home run in their last four games, their longest such streak since August 2016.

This afternoon’s pitching matchup is a good one: Masahiro Tanaka vs. Lance McCullers Jr. They are the poster children for this new anti-fastball movement that is slowly taking over baseball. Here are the bottom three pitchers in fastball usage since the start of last season:

R.A. Dickey: 16.6% (knuckleballer)

Lance McCullers Jr.: 40.5%

Injury Updates: Greg Bird (ankle) will begin playing in Extended Spring Training games Monday. I imagine he’ll do that a bunch of times before joining one of the minor league affiliates for an official rehab stint. Bird’s timetable is unchanged. He’s still looking at a mid-to-late May return … Tommy Kahnle (shoulder, biceps) has started throwing and everything is going well. Adam Warren (lat) is inching closer to playing catch … Tyler Austin is okay after jamming his hip making a diving play last night. He’s available today. Aaron Boone said Austin was scheduled to sit against McCullers anyway.

Game 27: Sabathia for the Sweep

The 2018 Yankees have hit their stride. They’ve won their last eight games — they outscored their opponents 62-17 in those eight games — and eleven of their last 13 games overall. That’ll work. Still lots of season left. Right now though, the Yankees look very much like the team pretty much everyone expected them to be coming into the season.

Tonight the Yankees have a chance to do something they haven’t done since 2003: Sweep a series in Anaheim. They’ve won a bunch of series at Angel Stadium since then, but the last sweep was 2003. The final day of that three-game sweep was the day the Yankees acquired Aaron Boone from the Reds. Baseball is a flat circle. A sweep and a ninth straight win tonight would be swell. Injury Updates: Tommy Kahnle (shoulder, biceps) played catch today for the first time since going on the disabled list … Adam Warren (back) is doing better, though he’s not yet at the point of throwing … Greg Bird (ankle) hit on the field and ran sprints for the first time as part of his rehab today … Brandon Drury (migraines) played in Triple-A Scranton’s doubleheader today and things are going well. The Yankees not yet finalized a date for his return.

Yankees place Adam Warren on 10-day DL with back injury

5:22pm ET: Warren has a lat strain and will be out longer than ten days, the Yankees say. He’s been pitching through it since the first series of the season, but it really flared up last night, hence the disabled list move.

12:27pm ET: Yet another reliever is heading to the disabled list. Earlier today the Yankees announced Adam Warren has been placed on the 10-day DL with what the team is calling a right back strain. Jonathan Holder has been called up to fill the vacated roster spot.

Warren threw 46 pitches in 2.2 innings last night, allowing a solo homer. He’s pitched to a 3.24 ERA (3.50 FIP) in 8.1 innings so far this year, and he missed a few games after being hit in the ankle by a comebacker. Warren has had back trouble before — he missed three weeks with a trap strain and another three weeks with back spasms last season.

The Yankees now have nine players on the disabled list: Warren (back), Greg Bird (ankle), Luis Cessa (oblique), Brandon Drury (migraines), Jacoby Ellsbury (oblique, hip, foot), Clint Frazier (concussion), Ben Heller (Tommy John surgery), Tommy Kahnle (shoulder, biceps), and Billy McKinney (shoulder). Good grief. There is no word on Warren’s timetable.

Now that Holder is up, the Yankees have one healthy pitcher on the 40-man roster in the minors: Jonathan Loaisiga. He’s a Single-A kid who realistically is not a big league option. Non-40-man call-up candidates include Cody Carroll, Oliver Perez, Brady Lail, and Chance Adams. I suspect we’ll see those guys at some point this summer.
